The RPG IV compiler support for calling Java methods and for writing RPG native methods hides almost all the JNI coding from the RPG programmer. However, RPG’s support is not necessarily the most efficient. For example, it always converts arrays between RPG and Java on calls and on entry and exit from native methods, but you may want to handle your own array conversions to improve performance.
RPG is quite a bit more simple than Java, generally, and OO-programming is quite a different paradigm. Here are some things that are likely to trip up developers migrating to Java: Arrays in RPG start at 1. Arrays in Java start at 0. Java doesn't have 'ouput' parameters, and all primitive types are passed by value (copied). This means that.In the January 8, 2004, issue of this newsletter, I demonstrated how to read an Excel spreadsheet in an RPG program. In this article, I intend to show the opposite, how to write an Excel spreadsheet. The Jakarta Project creates and maintains open-source solutions that are written in Java.Next, the CL program calls the RPG program COUNTTOKNS (Figure2), passing it the string the user entered and an empty numeric variable.COUNTTOKNS does all the interfacing with the Java class. When control returns to the CL program, the number of tokens, or words, in the user-entered string, which is stored in the numeric variable passed to the RPG program, is displayed on the screen.
Re: iText RPG-Java Sample Program No problem. That code is quite crude really but you may be able to expand it into something more useful. To handle the overloading you could add a simple 1,2 or 3 to the end of the method name. I guess you could also write a gui that allows you to choose which methods you want to prototype. The gui could also.Read More

These tutorials are useful both for those who want to program games, as for those who, with a basic or intermediate level in java, want to learn and improve java programming concepts in an entertaining way.Read More
Moving sprites. In this part of the Java 2D games tutorial we will work with sprites. Tweet. The term sprite has several meanings. It is used to denote an image or an animation in a scene. It is also used to represent any movable object in a game. Also one of the meanings is the code that encapsulates a character in a game. In our tutorial by using sprite we refer to a movable object or its.Read More
Hi. We are about to commence work on migrating from a Movex V12.4 RPG environment to an M3 V10.1 Java environment. We have several in-house programs, written in RPG, that query information in the Movex database, but do not do any updating. We would like to continue running these on the Java platform, if possible, but have been unable to find out.Read More

RPG's Support for Java RPG supports calling Java methods. (Starting in V5R1) RPG does not have direct support for accessing fields in a Java object or class. You have to call a Java method that returns the field, or call an API to retrieve the field. (But most Java classes do not make fields available, anyway, as it's considered a bad practice.).Read More
